3. Tips & Tricks
a. There are no cheatcodes in Fate!
b. Mem-Editors are evil!
c. Little cheatings are legal:
Because of the fact that the game is operating with a lot of random numbers, you can positivly influence your fate - but only if you run the game on the WinUAE-Emulator.
The functions "Load State" and "Save State" are needed for those little cheatings. With these functions, you can save or load a memory-image of the current gamestate. In the default configuration, you can call the WinUAE-Settings by pressing the key "F12". You´ll find the mentioned functions behind the item "Miscellaneous". All the following cheatings refer to these two functions.
The Partymembers (Using the example of a Banshee)
Who isn´t familiar with it? You´re running through the city to assemble an acceptable party and finally you find a Banshee - who even agrees to join your party. And then that: she is of the wrong race, got a horrible name ("Upfndumpf"), the attributes are disastrous or the maximum load is just ridiculous. What are you doing now? Right, you let her go - and start to search the city for another Banshee!
Solution:
You run through the city until you find a Banshee. In the Encounter-Mode (the scroll reads: "Encounter! You face 1 Banshee!") you create a "Save State". If the Banshee is unwilling to join the party, go and find the next one. Repeat this until you find a Banshee who is willing to join your party.
Now that the Banshee is a partymember, we take a look on her values - and if we don´t like what we see, we just reset the Banshee by "Load State". Well, we have to talk with her again, but all her values have changed! Now you may repeat this, until you´ve got your "Super-Banshee".
The free-points
With the "Help" of some dialogue partners, it is possible to increase the values for Skill, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma up to 40 - for free. But for that, you have to talk a lot - and all that running around, until you find a qualified dialogue partner!
Solution:
When a qualified dialogue partner is in front of you (Scroll: "Encounter! You face 1..."), make a "Save State". If he wasn´t able to help, you just need to perform a "Load State". Repeat this until he provides some help (but not more than 7 or 8 times, after that it should be clear that he´s unable to help us!). A list of qualified dialogue partners is located at the end of this section.
HP and MP
Unfortunately, the Hitpoints and Magepoints that a character gets with every new level, are depending on the mercy of the random number generator. And these points are also limited by a predefined value range - which is probably influenced by the race/class of a character too.
Winwood for example, has a value range from 2 to ca. 16 points. While Toronar and Mandrag have a value range from 2 to ca. 8 points. Maybe it depends on the Level-Index: The lower the Level-Index, the faster a character is rising - but for the price of a smaller value range for HP and MP.
Solution:
Be alert! When a character is close to the next level, and it comes to a fight, then "Save State" at the end of the fight (Scroll: "...searches the place and finds..."). If the character gets the next level and the gained values for HP/MP are to low, just "Load State" until you´re happy with the values.
Sure, it´s time-consuming and partly really annoying, but on that way Winwood reached his 1000 HPs at level 84 (And if I hadn´t missed out some level increases, then he´d probably managed it at level 70). Well, in terms of figures even at level 63, but the maximum value is reached seldom if ever.
It may become a trial of patience with Mages, because here, the HPs and the MPs are increased. And there you have to weigh, if you place more importance on HP or on MP; or if you want to repeat it, until both values hit the maximum range.
Is it worth the efford? Well, in 80% of all cases Mandrag and Toronar only got 2 HPs by a "common" level increase. With repeated loading, they mostly got 7 HPs and 9 MPs per level...

| Q: | What are the small holes in the walls good for? |
| A: | These holes were meant as a gag. They have no meaning for the game! (OP) |
| Q: | Catacombs (Lvl. 2): What´s the meaning of the inscription: "Armf sltmas Uczt" ? |
| A.1: | "Don´t bite the wall, please!" (OP) |
| A.2: | It really has no meaning! It´s just another stupid joke from the programmer to tease the player! (OP) |
| Q: | How to create Vanderlark? |
| A: | You need two parties to create Vanderlark (you may split one party if you like). With the first party you walk to Alcazar, say "Hello" and "Goodby", and after he left keep standing where you are. Switch to the second party and enter the Catacombs. Walk to the Alcazar-creation-field (in the first room), step on it, turn around and go back to Larvin - with this action Vanderlark is created. Now switch back to the first party and Vanderlark should be nearby. (Merope) |
| Q: | What is the Starflute good for? |
| A: | First, you have to be in the "Flute-chamber" (behind the Starflute). Now let a character play the Starflute in front of his own image, and every partymember will get 50 points added to his "Invulnerability sphere".(sircharles) |
| Q: | How do i get to the Starflute? |
| A: | Catacombs (Lvl. 4): At position 52:53, follow the "Wrong Way". |
| Q: | And how do i get the Starflute - the Teleport is deactivated? |
| A: | To activate this Teleport, you have to operate the two switches in level 7. But it is not confirmed that these 2 switches are enough. So the best way is, to generally operate all switches, from level 1 to level 7. |
WinUAE Hardware Configuration
Although "Fate" is just running fine on a real A500, you should be a little more generous within the WinUAE-Settings.
CPU and FPU:
- CPU: 68010
- CPU-Frequency: 4x (A1200)
Chipset:
- Chipset: Full ECS; Cycle-exact
- Chipset Extra: A500+
- Collision Level: Sprites and Sprites vs. Playfield
RAM:
- Chip: 2 MB
- Fast: 4 MB
Less Opponents
With 6 MB RAM installed, the whole game is loaded into memory and it runs without interruptions - and it´s also enough memory to create a lot of opponents in the surrounding area. If you install 1.5 MB of RAM (512 KB Chip-Ram, 1 MB Fast-Ram) instead, the game has to reload data more often, but for that the memory is just enough to create only a limited number of opponents - which most effects Mernoc, the Agyssium and the Castle Crypt. Moreover, the beeings in the wilderness aren´t exchanged so often anymore.
