I wasted more innings than I want to admit treating Trevor Hoffman like a standard velocity closer. His card earns outs when you make hitters doubt their timing, not when you try to paint 102 mph at the letters. Before spending MLB 26 stubs on a bullpen name, ask whether your current relief corps already has enough power arms. Hoffman fills a different job: he makes impatient opponents swing at pitches that look hittable for half a second.
Why Hoffman feels better in close games
His Circle Change is the reason to use him, but it is not an automatic strikeout button. Good Ranked players will sit on it if you throw it only below the zone with two strikes. What makes Hoffman frustrating to face is the fastball-changeup gap combined with late movement and reliable location. A changeup just under the knees after an elevated fastball often produces the ugly swing everyone expects. The same pitch becomes dangerous when repeated from the same tunnel.
I get the best results by treating the first batter as information gathering. Watch whether they chase inside, take low pitches, or start their swing early. Hoffman can work a full inning on a small read because many players refuse to adjust after one bad swing.
1. Use the first fastball to measure swing timing, not steal every strike.
2. Throw changeups in the zone occasionally to prevent easy takes.
3. Move the cutter or breaking pitch after showing repeated speed changes.
That last part matters more than perfect corner placement. Missing slightly off the plate with Hoffman is usually survivable; missing middle-middle after three slow pitches is where the card gets punished.
Best bullpen build around Trevor Hoffman
Hoffman works best as the contrast piece in a bullpen, not as your only late-inning answer. Pair him with at least one hard-throwing right-hander and a lefty who can attack same-side hitters. When an opponent has spent six innings catching up to velocity, Hoffman's slower profile can feel completely different. Bringing him in too early, however, gives opponents extra plate appearances to recognize the speed pattern.
For PVE, he is useful when you want clean saves without burning your top relievers. Against CPU lineups, keep the ball near the edges and let weak contact do its job. In PVP, save him for the seventh through ninth when the opponent's tendencies are clearer. His stamina is valuable, but trying to stretch him through multiple stressful innings can drain confidence quickly.
Common mistakes that make the card look worse
The biggest mistake is using the changeup as a reflex. Another is assuming lower velocity means you must nibble all game. Hoffman still needs strikes early in counts. A well-located fastball or cutter in the zone forces a decision; endless off-speed pitches outside it simply give disciplined hitters free bases.
Do not chase every new reliever release just because its rating is higher. If your roster already has expensive ninth-inning power, Hoffman may provide more practical value as the pitcher who breaks an opponent's timing. Keep some MLB stubs available for positions that actually weaken your lineup, then use Hoffman where his pacing can protect narrow leads.
