Choose race, sex, might or magic, and voice type. At the start of the game you can only choose between a might class and a magic class, resulting in your either becoming a fighter or an initiate. [...] The game has quite a few skills, and among them, 4 magical skills. All skills are developed by spending skill points (which you receive every time you gain a level). Like previously, it costs 2 points to increase a skill by 2, 3 points by 3 and so on. In addition you can find people throughout the world which teaches your characters to become experts, Masters and even Grand Masters of each skill. Only a few classes are allowed to achieve the final advance in certain skill expertise. Each spell requires the use of 2 skills (Spirit, Elemental, Dark or Light Magic) some even require 3. More powerful spells will also require you being an expert, master or grand master in any or both of the magical skills needed. For those of you that have played the earlier games, there are fewer spells than before, but they fortunately kept all the good ones.

Tim Lang - The combat system is nearly unchanged, but due to the drastic differences in engines, the combat experience is very different. Monster AI is the best it's ever been, so you can expect a solid whipping from smart creatures if you're not careful, and with the addition of monster vs. monster combat in the Arena, you would be well advised to watch a few battles to study how a monster may choose to fight you.
