Legends of Might and Magic makes a valiant effort to capitalize on the popularity of first-person team multiplayer titles, but in the end, only manages to deliver a mediocre offering. While it has its fun moments, and some of the maps are intriguing, Legends ultimately comes across as lacking ingenuity. The same aura and sense of involvement found in past M&M games isn't present when running around chaotically, blasting opponents with a Gatling Crossbow. Some shooter fans are bound to embrace this title, but it will take a special sort of game to dethrone Counter-Strike from its exalted position. Legends is not the one to do it.
For example, the combat in Heroes IV will be completely revamped. The biggest difference will be immediately obvious to Heroes fans: Combat now takes place on an isometric battlefield, rather than from a side view as in the previous games. In addition, your hero characters won't just stand on the sidelines shooting off spells every now and then. They're now in the thick of it along with all your other units, and can engage in battle directly. There are other more subtle but equally significant changes to the combat, such as the inclusion of some basic line-of-sight rules, as well as major changes to the way retaliation attacks now work. And of course, the actual creatures on the battlefield will be quite different as well. Read to learn what will be so special about each of them.
The game will feature seven campaigns, and each campaign has a story through which your hero must progress. Each campaign has multiple scenarios you must make your way through to ultimately get to the end of the campaign.
The game also offers cool little features, such as the ability to get your hero imprisoned in a foreign land, and having to send an army to bust him lose from his jail. If your hero is killed in a foreign battle, you'll also be able to take the tombstone that pops up where he was felled, and use it to resurrect him back in your homeland.
As for multiplayer, New World is still cementing exactly what kind of multiplayer will be included out of the box. It will feature LAN play, that will allow up to six players to face off against each other. The game also will be including some type of matching service, such as GameSpy or MPlayer, but that hasn't been settled yet.
As a final note, this game could still succeed if 3DO would have the class and integrity to fix it. Class specific weapons and a greater variation among classes would be nice. Adding bot play would go the rest of the distance towards making a great shooter. As it stands now, however, it is just a shame that we have another great company releasing utter trash.
Unfortunately, Legends of Might and Magic feels like an opportunity missed. Although it can be quite fun to play, that's largely due to the elements borrowed from other titles, whilst most of the choices made to give the game its own identity have tended to be bad ones. There's some of the frantic fun of the Quake titles, and a smidgen of the strategy that makes Counterstrike so engaging, but not enough of either to make it a title that most players should be willing to spend their time or money on.
Wieder mal sehr kritisch ...Lacking seems to be an appropriate word to not only describe the sound, but the entire game. Like Frankenstein and the XFL, Legends of Might and Magic is a failed experiment. It fails to capture the essence of Counterstrike, it fails to provide a strong fantasy/medieval background, and it fails to be enjoyable. There are plenty of free MODs out there that do this type of gameplay far better than LoMM – you’d be well advised to check those out instead of this game.
Scheinbar gibt es zuviele Counterstrike-Fans und zu wenige Action-Might-and-Magic-Fans bei den Testern .....LoMM combines elements from Counter-Strike and Wheel of Time...the bad ones
[...] But alas, try as we might, we just couldn't find any magic in this lackluster addition to shooter horde.
[...] All in all, LoMM is a mediocre title that fails to make its mark in the annals of PC shooters. The developers drew off of a solid blueprint, but what you're left with in the end is an unexciting, lackadaisical Counter-Strike knock-off set in a fantasy world.
The new dialogue system will take a page from RPGs like Baldur's Gate with branching conversations. A new class system will stress flexibility throughout your characters' careers. There are might classes (paladins, rangers, crusaders, mercenaries) and magic classes (mages, druids, liches, priests) and you'll be able to change your class as you play. The spell system will be more flexible by opening spellcasting to more classes. Skills will have specific and unique functions for each class to differentiate characters as they get more powerful. The combat system won't change much, offering real time or turn-based modes depending on the player preference. Lang says the LithTech engine will allow combat to be a little more "action oriented" this time around.
Es wird also 8 Klassen geben - 4 Might und 4 Magic - und man kann die Klassen während des Spielverlaufes ändern. Ach ja, und vier Artworks wurden veröffentlicht:Resources on the overland map aren't just up for grabs anymore. To claim a resource, you have to build it up. For instance, a player who finds a gold vein has to pay to build a mine on top of it before it produces any income. There are now two levels of fog of war, so once you explore part of the map, you won't be able to see units moving there unless one of your armies or towns has a line of sight. One side effect of this is that the game will move faster, since you won't have to — get to? — watch every unit move when it isn't your turn.
Might and Magic isn't a terrible game, but it's certainly not a very good one, either. It lacks a lot of key features that people expect from a multiplayer shooter. However, it does have the potential to grow if 3DO and New World put forth the effort to make it work. A fantasy-based team game is not a bad idea, and Legends is on the cusp of being a fun game, but the lack of editing capability and the omission of offline bots severely limit its replay value.
If mediocrity and complacency were crimes, Legends of Might and Magic would get tossed in the dungeon. Despite its many blemishes, it's not a bad game overall and can be entertaining for short periods of time. Ultimately, though, it's more disappointing than exciting, and not just because it's transparently modeled after a much better game. It's also an opportunity wasted: With so many excellent science-fiction, counterterrorist, and military shooters available, an imaginative, high-quality fantasy shooter would be a welcome addition to the genre. Unfortunately, Legends of Might and Magic isn't that shooter. The characters and weapons all lazily merge together in a disjointed game design. That is, when a fantasy game's sorceress is ultimately little different from an archer or warrior, you know there's a problem. The paper-thin swords-and-sorcery backdrop isn't used to any real effect either, nor is the Might and Magic license itself. Ultimately, Legends of Might and Magic mightily lacks the magic that turns middling games into great ones.
Das spricht leider für sich selbst ...The graphics are strong, but not heart-pounding. The LithTech engine runs both in- and outdoor levels with ease, and the pallets of browns, greens, beige, and blues are pleasing. Conversely, the monster animation gets a bit weird; the lizard-like things actually seemed to hop, rather than walk or run. Nevertheless, I'll take a slight animation hit to get fast frame rates.
There's nothing new here, but neither is there anything wrong. Legends Of Might And Magic combines much of what has come before, throws it into a medieval world, and produces an exhilarating shooter. Who cares if innovation isn't the meat of this game; its tasty action more than satisfies my sweet tooth..
Despite its faults I never said that Legends of Might and Magic wasn't fun. It is fun the same way pretty much all online shooters are fun. Its nice to play for a day or two for a change of pace, but in terms of gameplay quality it doesn't come near any anything else on the market. It plays like what it is, a poorly executed copy of Counterstrike, and if you go in with that in mind you won't be disappointed. However, I can't recommend buying it due to the numerous imbalances and poorly executed tactical gameplay. If you want team based combat go buy Half-Life and download CS. It'll cost you 1/4 as much and you'll have a lot more fun.
Harte Worte.
